Day 1- Rome

Read page 152-153. Write out main ideas and the timeline (Rome only). Start reading 155-159.

 Main Ideas:

  • Power and Authority- Rome began as a republic, a government in which elected officials represent the people. Eventually rulers called emperors seized power and expanded the empire.
  • Empire Building- At it's height, the roman empire touched three continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa. For several centuries, Rome brought peace and prosperity to it's empire before it's eventual collapse.
  • Religious and Ethical Systems- Out of Judea rose a monotheistic, or single god, religion known as christianity. Based on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, it soon spread through Rome and beyond. 
Timeline:
  • 509 B.C. - Rome becomes a republic.
  • 264 B.C. - First Punic War begins.
  • 218 B.C. - In the second Punic War, Hannibal invades Italy.
  • 31 B.C. - Octavian defeats the forces of Anthony and Cleopatra. 
  • 284 A.D. - Diocletian becomes emperor of Rome.
  • 476 A.D. - Western Roman Empire falls.

Day 7 Discuss this topic: The United States is declining, like the Roman Empire did. You may agree or disagree, but give a solid reason. I believe that in some ways the Unites States is declining, like the Roman Empire but in other ways the United States is doing well. I think that for the United States, our education and military is doing well, but our health and government is declining. The United States has many public schools which makes it easy for everyone to get a basic education. I think that having knowledgeable people is something that is needed to keep our government from  declining. With out education, we might have made the same mistakes as the Romans did back then. Our health is a big concern that could cause the U.S. over all to decline. Health is important to keep everyone doing well. Today in class we had a second review day for our test that was supposed to be tomorrow. Due to the fact that we still have eight slides left to look at and talk about, we will be reviewing again tomorrow and our test will now be moved to Wednesday. Our test is 50 questions and all multiple choice.

Today in class we did a work sheet on Egypt. Mr. Schick didn't make the worksheet so he didn't know some of the answers and half of them weren't in the text book. I searched for the answers half of the class before being told they weren't in the book so then we looked them up on line.
