Read page 155-159 and answer questions 1, 3, 4, and 5.

1.  Terms and Names

  • Republic- A form of government in which power rest with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders.
  • Patrician- Wealthy landowners who hold most of the power.
  • Plebeians- Common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population.
  • Tribunes- Elect representatives.
  • Consul- Commanded the army and directed the government for one year.
  • Senate- The aristocratic branch of Rome's government.
  • Dictator- Leader who had absolute power to make laws and command an army.
  • Legion- The soldiers of Rome.
  • Punic Wars- The wars fought between Rome and Carthage.
  • Hannibal- A fearsome military leader of Carthage.
3. What limits were there on the power of the Roman Consuls?
  • One year long.
  • After being elected, you couldn't be elected for another 10 years.
4. What was the significance of the Twelve Tables?
  • They were laws the government passed to keep things fair and people safe.
5. How was the Hannibal's attack on Rome daring and different?
  • He didn't attack head on. It was more of a surprise attack.
